Used, in Colonial times, to carry the traditional New England baked beans home from the local bakery. The ingredients (beans, molasses & salt-pork) in an iron or ceramic pot were taken to the bakery by frugal "Yankees"  and allowed to slow cook in the baker's ovens until evening. At which time, a youngster was sent with the bean pot basket to retrieve the bubbling pot of beans.
